for my girls

Not that there’s an abundance of similarities between the two records, but I’m enjoying the new Animal Collective album in a way that I haven’t enjoyed an album since Bjork did Homogenic. Merriweather Post Pavillion pushes an envelope on the cerebral/experimental aspects of arty music and uses them to facilitate the immediacy and melody that we expect from our pop albums. And Bjork’s 90s output perfected exactly that art-pop sensibility. But where Homogenic was bracing and melodramatic, this album’s just a joy to listen to.
