“Nashville”

Gospel Gossip is a terrific shoegaze/post-punk band that started playing around Northfield and eventually the cities during my sophomore year, when their drummer and singer/guitarist were at Carleton. I’ve seen them live about seven or eight times, and its always impressive to see three people make so much noise.

Personal investment aside, their new single, “Nashville”, just kills. And it’s even got a positive – if backhanded – review from Pitchfork! Which it deserves (minus the backhandedness), because it shows off basically all of what makes the band awesome – nice melody, a goddamn maelstrom of distortion and feedback, all carried by a manic drum performance. The band has always walked the noise/pop line tremulously, and “Nashville” might be their best executed synthesis yet. So go stream it. If nothing else, the Pitchfork nod has given the band some completely deserved exposure: “Nashville” already has more plays than every other track on their MySpace combined.
