for your own special sweetheart

This was my own Valentine’s Day party playlist. It was meant to provide background for socializing leading up to a movie/drinking game (The Princess Bride) which was the focus of the party. This meant that I could include some songs which might not be built for dance party specifications. Still, it goes for upbeat: “If Looks Could Kill” by Camera Obscura was the sets sonic lynchpin, and everything else was built around that. Only one song was chosen ironically (Lifehouse) but how’s this for faint praise damnation: “Hanging By a Moment” is not nearly as terrible as I remember it being.  If you’re one of those for whom artist non-repetition is crucial I’d say: for the Cure, take “Just Like Heaven” over “Love Song”, for Belle and Sebastian ,”Funny Little Frog” over “Seeing Other People”, and whichever of the two Camera Obscura songs you prefer.

The big challenge for this set was placing Smith’s version of “Baby It’s You”.  Gayle McCormick’s sings with so much expressive power that whatever follows the song has to sound trivial. I think the Streets’ “Could Well Be In” is in fine service here, a down-tempo song about a new beginning.
